For almost a century (1836–1925), the Dublin Metropolitan Police was responsible for law and order in Ireland's capital.

This book describes the background to policing in Dublin (including its elaborate 'watch' system) and then focuses on the DMP itself – the type of men in the force, their background and their training. Many interesting and amusing anecdotes are included. Lists are given of the men who were killed on duty, transferred to and from the Army, to the Garda Síochána etc.

Some 12,500 men served with the DMP, in this book their lifestyle is described; a companion volume, The Dublin Metropolitan Police: a complete alphabetical list of officers and men, 1836–1925, lists them by name and by number.

Jim Herlihy, a retired member of the Garda Síochána and a co-founder of the Garda Síochána Historical Society, has worked on these sources for many years. His many publications include The Royal Irish Constabulary: a short history and genealogical guide (2016) and Royal Irish Constabulary officers: a biographical dictionary and genealogical guide, 1816–1922(2005).
