This work traces the fortunes of a minor gentry family, the MacGeough Bonds of The Argory, Co. Armagh, through the dramatic changes that occurred in rural Ireland from 1880 onwards. It investigates the impact of the land war and subsequent economic and political developments on landlords in the area and examines the way in which this family responded to the challenges of the time.

Olwen Purdue is Professor of Modern Social History at Queen's University Belfast, where she is also Director of the Centre for Public History.
