“Ronnie Wallace has carefully and clearly edited and prepared for publication the Churchwardens' Accounts of the Parishes of St Bride, St Michael Le Pole (the pool) and St Stephen, Dublin. This is one of the windows lately opened upon the history of the parishes of the city of Dublin, and not the first by him. The parish was responsible for the care of the poor, and the records and accounts indicate how money was collected and paid out to people in need, very often women and children. We learn that one Welsh woman was given her fare to return to her native land, but she did not go, and so was refused any further help. Perhaps even more often, the cost was paid by the parish of burying poor men, women and children who had died. Ronnie Wallace’s ‘Vestry Records’ will invite the reader to return to them, for many an interesting insight.” Mark Gardner (Search. A Church of Ireland Journal, vol. 43.3. Autumn, 2020)
