The 1930s are an underdeveloped period in Irish historical writing. This book of essays has grown out of a desire to do something about this by bringing together the wealth of exciting research that has been done by postgraduates in recent years. The seven original essays collected in this volume reflect the changing content of historical research. These detailed accounts of a variety of social and political issues all relate decisions made on the level of high politics to the experience of ordinary people and there-by illuminate several aspects of Irish life in the 1930s.
Joost Augusteijn, a graduate of the University of Amsterdam, currently lectures in modern Irish history at Queen's University, Belfast.
