This is the first major study of the political and cultural forces that shaped the development of penal correction in Ireland. Information technologies, forms of discipline, and the structural design of the Irish convict system, while analyzed in great detail, are always related to wider European developments: government and police; disciplinary education; changing moral and religious sensibilities; and the reform projects of the new social science.
