The Religion of Irish Dissent, 1650-1800
Kevin Herlihy, editor
This book represents the further development of an imperfectly understood aspect of Irish religious and social history, the rich tradition of Protestant dissent in Ireland during the 17th and 18th centuries. In Part One larger issues concerning religion are considered, including the relationship between dissenting Protestant communities and the established church, and the practice of personal prayer. The focus in Part Two is on particular aspects of various dissenting societies, including the Baptist and Quaker communities. Part Three is devoted to the presentation of a contemporary document, A Narrative of the Case of Miles Crowly, from which much can be learned concerning the differences in religious attitudes that existed in late 18th-century Ireland.
