Derry is one of the most important dioceses in the Irish Church, both in terms of its population and its geographical extent. Its long and turbulent history, however, has not received a commensurate degree of attention. This book sets out to redress that neglect. It comprises a collection of essays that survey much of the history of the Church in a fascinating part of Ireland from Colmcille's times up to the end of the very recent 'troubles'.
Dr Henry A. Jefferies teaches history at Thornhill College, Derry. He is author of several studies on medieval and early modern history and Irish ecclesiastical history including Priests and prelates of Armagh in the age of reformations, 1518-1558 (Dublin, 1997); Kieran Devlin is co-author of The Clergy of the diocese of Derry - an index (Dublin, 1997).
