This festschrift was first published in 1940 in honour of the professor of early Irish history at University College Dublin. On its publication it was heralded as a seminal collection, spanning many fields of study, and its importance has not diminished in the intervening period. There are fifty studies in all, ivided into four groupings - Celtic Languages (twenty-five essays); Archaeology and Prehistory (six essays); Early and Medieval Irish History (fifteen essays); and Folklore (four essays). The essays are brief, yet each can claim to be as important in its field as this collection is to Celtic studies as a whole.
The list of contributors, which includes Robin Flower, Myles Dillon, Daniel A. Binchy, Osborn Bergin, R.I. Best, Gerard Murphy, Louis Gougaud, Aubrey Gwynn, Rudolf Thurneysen and Edmund Curtis, is an indication of the universally high standard of this collection.
